A streak needs an unbroken sequence

A streak is different from a count of qualifying games. Ten games with at least 20 disposals across a season need not be ten in a row. When you want a streak, say so and give the condition clearly.

Look at the start and end of the returned run. For a player streak, check whether the sequence follows appearances rather than every fixture round. For a team streak, be clear whether you mean consecutive wins overall or consecutive wins against one opponent.

Name the quarter or half

“How many points did Luke Breust produce in third quarters?” narrows the scoring period. A whole-game total cannot answer that question. When asking about first halves or second halves, check that the returned period matches what you requested.

Not every statistic is available by quarter for every season. Check the coverage note before making a historical comparison. Also separate “a first-quarter goal” from “the first goal of a match”: one describes a period, the other describes the order of scoring.

Select games before taking an average

A conditional average uses only the games that meet your condition. “Marcus Bontempelli average clearances when he has at least 6 inside 50s in 2024” first selects those matches, then averages their clearances.

This can describe what happened in a particular set of games. It does not prove that more inside 50s caused more clearances. Check how many games qualify and compare against a broader season search if you want context.

Separate a scoring period from scoring order

Compare “How many times did Jaidyn Stephenson kick a first-quarter goal?” with “How many times did Jaidyn Stephenson kick the first goal of a match?” The first concerns scoring within a quarter. The second concerns one position in a match’s scoring sequence.

A player can kick a first-quarter goal after somebody else has already opened the scoring. They would satisfy the period condition without being the first goalkicker. Likewise, a count of matches containing a goal is different from the total number of goals across those matches.

When an answer looks too large or too small, check whether it counts goals, qualifying games or positions in a sequence. Write “in how many games” when appearances meeting a condition are what you want to count, and check that wording against the returned explanation.

Ratios need two clear quantities

Name both parts of a ratio, such as goals to shots at goal, and read the result’s definition. Goals divided by shots is a different measure from goals divided by behinds. An average of game-by-game percentages can also differ from a percentage calculated from combined totals.

A player with very few attempts can have a high ratio. Inspect the underlying counts before treating the percentage as a reliable comparison. For scoring progression questions, check the match and scoring sequence as well as the final score.

Look at how a match unfolded

A scoring progression question follows the scores through a match. “Biggest deficit for Richmond vs St Kilda last season?” asks about the gap during play, which can be quite different from the final margin. Check the season interpreted by the result, or replace last season with a year when you revisit the question later.

The match centre gives you another way to inspect the story. Read the quarter scores for the broad changes, then use the scoring timeline and event list for individual moments. A team can have its biggest lead well before the final siren. A final score cannot by itself establish the biggest lead or deficit.

Ask about awards and coaching records

Awards are recorded achievements rather than calculations from match statistics. “Who claimed Mark of the Year in 2021?” names both the award and its year. That is different from finding the player with the highest mark count in a match or season. A high statistical tally does not tell you who won a judged award.

Coaching questions can examine match results over a selected period. Try “Coach Chris Fagan’s finals record in 2024?” and check the included games. A coach profile also provides a game log and records, giving you a way to inspect the matches behind a summary. Keep a coaching record separate from the person’s playing career when both are available.

Compare output against opponents and by position

“Against which opponent has Jeremy Cameron taken the most total marks?” groups his output by the team he faced. This is useful for finding a pattern across opponents, but totals are also affected by how often he played each side. Follow up with averages or inspect the appearances before calling an opponent his easiest matchup.

Position questions let you look at groups such as full forwards or half-forwards. “Full forward stat lines in 2024?” is a starting point for those records. Treat the position as part of the selection, and check what the table includes. A listed role does not describe every movement a player made during a match.
